They are used for high-stress fastening and joint securing in extreme-reducing-acid environments where conventional stainless steel and duplex fasteners fail. Typical applications include equipment handling active hydrochloric acid, sour-gas wellheads with high hydrogen sulfide concentration, phosphoric acid production vats, and geothermal steam piping systems.

While Duplex 2205 is suitable for seawater and Hastelloy C-276 is an all-purpose alloy for oxidizing and reducing environments, Hastelloy B-2 is a highly specialized reducing-acid expert. B-2 contains significantly more nickel and molybdenum, giving it much greater resistance to localized pitting and stress corrosion cracking in pure hydrochloric, sulfurous, and phosphoric acids.

Upgraded alloys represent an investment, but Hastelloy B-2 provides optimized cost-performance in systems dominated by reducing acids, providing a more focused and cost-effective alternative to all-purpose superalloys like C-276, while extending joint lifecycles to 25–30 years compared to duplex alloys that would crack or corrode within a few years.

The NACE MR0175 standard certifies that the alloy and heat-treatment processes used to make the bolts provide proven resistance to sulfide stress corrosion cracking (SSCC). In oil, gas, and geothermal environments, hydrogen sulfide can cause sudden, brittle cracking under stress. Having this certification ensures that the fasteners will not suffer unpredictable, catastrophic failure in the field.
