Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Sunmach Incoloy Bolts

They are used for high-stress fastening and maintaining joint tension in extreme high-temperature environments where standard stainless steel fasteners would soften, creep, or deform. Typical applications include gas turbines in power generation, high-temperature steam systems, petrochemical furnace piping, chemical reactors, and commercial heat-treatment furnaces.

Standard stainless steel (such as 316L) loses its mechanical strength rapidly once operating temperatures exceed 600°C. Incoloy 800HT bolts are specifically engineered to remain structurally stable and resist oxidation at continuous operating temperatures up to 900°C, preventing joint loosening or bolt stretching over long-term thermal cycles.

Incoloy 800HT contains controlled additions of titanium and aluminum. When the alloy undergoes specialized heat treatment, these elements form microscopic precipitates within the metal that lock the grain structure in place, preventing the metal grains from shifting or stretching under high temperatures and heavy clamping forces.

Standard Stainless Steel is adequate up to 600°C, while Incoloy 800HT is optimal for continuous 900°C service and is highly cost-effective for high-temperature-only service. Inconel (like 600 or 625) provides superior corrosion resistance in extreme, aggressive acid environments, but at roughly double the material cost of Incoloy.

Creep rupture testing (ASTM E139) proves that the Incoloy bolt maintains its structural strength under sustained loading over extended periods at high temperatures. Without this verification, fasteners can slowly stretch or deform over time, resulting in a gradual loss of joint clamping force, causing joint leakage or catastrophic failure under pressure.
