They are primarily used to clamp and support heavy-duty piping systems in offshore oil platforms, desalination plants and chemical processing facilities. Their U-shaped design allows them to securely anchor pipes to structural steel beams, preventing pipe sagging and movement while still accommodating axial movement caused by thermal expansion.
Standard 316L stainless steel has lower mechanical yield strength and is highly vulnerable to crevice corrosion underneath pipe insulation and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) when exposed to warm saltwater. Duplex 2205 provides double the yield strength and outstanding resistance to chloride-induced pitting, preventing U-bolts from stretching or corroding under high mechanical preloads.
As pipes transport hot fluids, they expand and contract, causing them to slide axially. A properly installed U-bolt acts as a guide; its spring-like geometry allows the pipe to move without binding or wearing through the pipe wall, while still absorbing mechanical vibrations.
A U-bolt is a continuous, single-piece threaded rod bent into a U shape that is tightened from a single side of a structural support beam using nuts, designed for high structural and tensile loads. A pipe clamp typically consists of two separate semi-circular metal bands bolted together, generally used for lighter-duty hanging applications.
If the spacing between the U-bolt legs is too loose, the clamping force will be unevenly distributed, allowing the pipe to slide or vibrate excessively. If the spacing is too tight, forcing the U-bolt over the pipe will bend the legs outward, distorting the threads. Maintaining a strict leg spacing tolerance of ±0.05 mm ensures a perfect fit and uniform clamping pressure.
