They are used to actively maintain clamp load, absorb severe mechanical vibrations, and compensate for thermal expansion and contraction in bolted joints. Unlike flat washers, spring washers provide continuous, active elastic spring tension, making them ideal for high-vibration and thermal-cycling applications such as offshore equipment, steam turbine casings, and petrochemical piping.

Standard 316L stainless steel has lower mechanical yield strength and is highly vulnerable to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) and pitting in chloride-heavy seawater. Duplex 2205 provides double the yield strength and superior fatigue limit resistance, ensuring the spring washer does not permanently deform under high preloads, maintaining its active locking force indefinitely in marine and chemical environments.

Belleville Washers (Conical Disc) are best for high-stress, heavy-load applications and can be stacked to adjust load-deflection curves. Wave Washers are ideal for moderate load applications requiring compact vertical clearance, such as compensating for thermal expansion in electric motors and bearings. Split Lock Washers (Helical Split) are used for light-duty vibration damping and general-purpose fastening.

As a bolt is tightened down, it compresses the curved or conical geometry of the spring washer. This elastic compression applies a continuous upward force against the bolt head or nut. If the assembly experiences vibration or minor thread relaxation, the spring washer extends slightly to fill the gap and re-applies clamping tension, preventing the fastener from rotating loose.
